On Tuesday, Cheyenne local Stephen Wallace was shopping at Walmart when a rattlesnake bit him in the garden section of the store.
Wallace reached for a plant in the garden section. The snake was disturbed and bit Wallace on his hand.
Wallace then ripped the snake off himself. Walmart employee Tim Schmidt, 23, helped Wallace and killed the snake with a nearby shovel.
“I heard some noise coming from the garden center,” said Schmidt, “You can imagine the look on my face when I saw a man screaming.”
Schmidt accounts how he helped Wallace and killed the snake.
“I had to think quickly.” he said, “So, I just grabbed a shovel which was close to me.”
Afterward, Wallace was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he was hospitalized and treated for his snake bit.
The snake was about 18 inches long. Rattlesnakes are known for being highly venomous.
“I ain’t no hero.” Said Schmidt, “Just an average joe who did what he had to do.”
The question of how the snake got there remains unanswered.
